New York CNN —Flight cancellations across the country continue to cause headaches for thousands of travelers, and Southwest is topping the list of most-affected airlines for the second consecutive day. Saturday and Sunday saw more than 16,500 flights delays and nearly 3,000 cancellations across the United States, according to FlightAware. The Federal Aviation Administration instated the order after a piece of the fuselage blew off an Alaska Airlines flight on January 5 with 177 people on board. United has canceled nearly 13% of its flights, making it the second most affected airline behind Southwest, which doesn’t fly any Max 9 planes. Alaska Airlines experienced the third-highest rate of cancellations on Sunday, having called off about 15% of its total flights.

The nation’s top accident investigator said Thursday that a surge in close calls between planes at U.S. airports this year is a "clear warning sign” that the aviation system is under stress. She said there has been a “lack of meaningful” training — and more reliance on computer-based instruction — by the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines. There have been many close calls in recent months, with the scariest occurring in February in Austin, Texas. An air traffic controller had cleared both planes to use the same runway. The NTSB is investigating about a half-dozen close calls this year, and the FAA says there were 23 of the most serious class of close calls in the last fiscal year, up from 16 the year before and 11 a decade ago.

WHP Global, the toy store’s parent company, announced an expansion of up to 24 flagship stores, as well as opening stores at airports and cruise ships. The stores for the cruise industry will sell cruise-themed merchandise, though Toys “R” Us did not specify on which cruise lines or where the stores will open. The 24 flagship locations will join the 452 Toys “R” Us shops that are currently open in Macy’s stores across the country. In 2021, WHP Global acquired Toys “R” Us from Tru Kids Inc., which bought the failed brand in a 2018 liquidation sale.

The Department of Transportation is levying the $4.1 million fine, “the largest civil penalty that the Department has ever assessed” it said in a statement, for lengthy tarmac delays of 43 flights that impacted more than 5,800 passengers. In the longest of the delays, passengers sat aboard a plane in Texas in August 2020 for six hours and three minutes. Current rules also require airlines provide passengers water and a snack. American would pay $2.05 million of the fine to the government and has been credited for paying the other half in passenger compensation.

It recently converted an oil refinery in California and is expanding its refineries in Singapore and Rotterdam.
